Mark Zuckerberg recently announced the release of Threads, an app developed by the Instagram team that focuses on sharing through text. Threads offer a separate space for real-time updates and public conversations, catering to both creators and casual users. The aim is to expand Instagram's strengths in photo and video sharing to include text, creating a positive and creative platform for expressing ideas. Similar to Instagram, Threads allows you to follow and connect with friends, creators, and people who share your interests. The app also includes safety and user controls that are already available on Instagram.

To get started with Threads, simply log in using your Instagram account. Your Instagram username and verification will carry over, and you can customize your profile specifically for Threads. For users under 16 (or 18 in certain countries), a private profile is automatically set up upon joining Threads. You have the option to follow the duplicate accounts you do on Instagram and discover new ones that align with your interests. Threads also support core accessibility features such as screen reader support and AI-generated image descriptions.

Your feed on Threads will display posts from people you follow, as well as recommended content from new creators. Posts can contain up to 500 characters, links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes long. You can easily share a Threads post to your Instagram story or share it as a link on other platforms.

Threads include tools to foster positive and productive conversations. You have control over who can mention or reply to you. Similar to Instagram, you can filter out replies containing specific words. The app provides options to unfollow, block, restrict, or report profiles. Safety measures and Instagram's Community Guidelines are enforced to ensure a secure environment. Over the years, Instagram has invested significantly in user protection and remains dedicated to advancing integrity efforts.

In the future, Threads plans to become compatible with ActivityPub, an open social networking protocol established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This compatibility will allow Threads to connect with other apps that support the ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon and WordPress. This move aims to enable new connections and create a more interconnected network of diverse platforms. Users of compatible apps will be able to follow and interact with Threads users without needing a Threads account, and vice versa. Threads are committed to providing users with control over their audience, and the plan is to work with ActivityPub to allow users to transfer their content to another service if desired.

The benefits of open social networking protocols extend beyond simple following capabilities. Developers can build new features and user experiences that integrate seamlessly with other open social networks, promoting innovation and experimentation. Each compatible app can establish its own community standards and content moderation policies, giving users the freedom to choose spaces that align with their values. This decentralized approach, similar to email and the web, is believed to play a vital role in the future of online platforms.

Threads is Meta's first app designed to be compatible with an open social networking protocol, intending to help people find their community regardless of the app they use.

The app is now available for download on iOS and Android in more than 100 countries.
